Evidence-based skills training for emotional dysregulation, Borderline Personality Disorder, self-harm, and eating disorders. DBT teaches practical skills for managing intense emotions and building a life worth living.
DBT teaches skills across four core areas:
The foundation of all DBT skills. Learning to observe thoughts and emotions without judgment, and to be present in the current moment without acting impulsively.
Skills for surviving crisis situations without making things worse — including distraction techniques, self-soothing, and radical acceptance.
Understanding and managing intense emotions — identifying emotions, reducing vulnerability to emotional crises, and building positive emotional experiences.
Maintaining self-respect and achieving goals in relationships — assertiveness skills, maintaining relationships, and navigating conflict.
Standard CBT focuses primarily on changing thoughts and behaviours. DBT adds a validation component — explicitly acknowledging that your responses make sense given your history — alongside change strategies. This "dialectical" balance (acceptance AND change) makes DBT particularly effective for people who have found other therapies invalidating or insufficient.
